Hi Lana

I loved your story about West End and I feel that our paths may have crossed at some point in time; I have lived in West End off and on for 36 yrs.

I am Eileen Bennett's grand daughter and I feel we need to explore the details of your story regarding the history of St Veronicas. My understanding is that The St Veronica Welfare Committee was established in 1956 by my grand parents.

In response to an appeal by Elizabeth Reid, a lady working in Hong Kong with refugees, They began to raise funds through film evenings, barbeques and soccer matches.

As the work grew a Committee of unpaid lay persons was formed and named the St Veronica Welfare Committee. My Granny actually chose 'St Veronica' as a symbol of the compassion and commitment which should animate their work. Veronica is a symbol of the woman who took pity on the suffering.

In 1980 The Committee began operating in the thrift shop on Hardgrave Rd but I am sure the St Veronica Welfare Committee actually bought the shop with a bank loan because when it was paid off some years later we had a big family celebration.

I think your Aunty Anne Remanous was part of the original Welfare Committee and a great contributer to my grand father's election campaigns. My Granny talks about Anne all the time as the person who worked tirelessly for what she believed in.

If any of this is inaccurate can you please let me know? I would really love to hear your thoughts.

I actually think that it's a goanna, not a just a lizard. You'd have to be churlish to not like it. Not only is it BIG, but its earthy colours and bright highlights recall the red dirt of Australia and the Aboriginal Dreamtime Rainbow Serpent. It is also significantly sited under trees at the t-junction of Russell (?) and Boundary Streets. This lends it other characteristics, symbolic, pragmatic and contradictory.

Apart from the Rainbow Serpent connotations, it also symbolizes, among all the other cultural references in the area, the links to the vanished Aboriginal homeland of the Jagera and other tribes that lived here in a land of plenty before whitey came and took it away.

Its pragmatic significance is as a meeting place because it is so easy to find. Kids play on it; people sit on the plinth; it is a landmark and reference point. It was nearly loved to death and needed significant repairs to go on doing what it did so well.

It is contradictory because, while it refers to Aboriginal legend, it is a product of the technology of a civilization and culture that has overwhelmed Aboriginal civilization and culture. Where once this this area teemed with Aborigines, it now teems with people from everywhere else and where once Aborigines lived in a land of plenty, they are now in declining numbers at the bottom of the socio-economic heap evident only as drunks and moochers. One day when they vanish as if they had never been, the only visible evidence of their existence will be a concrete goanna.

Our motorcycles have been garaged for months, under repairs. I for one can't wait for better weather so I can get out on my supercross bike. We have some of work to do on it, and its gonna take some time, but like we do each year, we upgrade several of the systems, and make our bike better than it was before. Thanks for the article.

Thanks Neale. That's great. Where is your original article published? Would be great to read it. Be good to hear some stories about particular races, riders, events that happened at Davies Park. I agree that some sort of memorial is in order but it should include the characters, triumphs, tragedies, sounds etc.

Hi Pandy

West End will change forever if only the economically privileged can afford to live there. The beauty of West End lays in it's cultural diversity. I totally agree with you, do whatever you need to have your message heard.

When I visit Brisbane I want to be able to go to the West End I know & love, not just another suburb in another city.

One of the frustrating things about opposing local government plans is that the community is typically on the back foot. While government simply rolls out yet another urban development scheme, it typically takes a lot of time for the community to learn how to gain actual influence. This would be different if communities could learn from each other. For example, the TTS group in Toowong, which was successful in overturning plans to build a tunnel entrance through this tin and timber suburb drew lessons from the success story of the Gap community group, which was successful in stopping the construction of the western bypass road. Wooloowing residents are currently facing a similar challenge as Toowong was 6 month ago, and they are now learning from the Toowong group (which I helped to set up), and West End could of course also benefit from this collective expertise. In order to facilitate this, I have set up a blogspace which can be found at http://www.brisbanecitizenforum.blogspot.com

This blog is a very modest starting point of what I hope will become a bigger local movement. The way in which I hope to develop the initiative is to set up a normal website with a common home page and sub-sections for individual communities. In this way, communities can browse to other local communities, see what they are up to and drop them a line if they need advice.

Best wishes,

Frank

Your photos are fantastic. Thanks for putting on the website. I am sure your energy and the passion of residents for west end will turn around this renewal strategy.
